چکیده

Abstract Poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBH) foams were prepared by a foam injection molding (FIM) process using nitrogen (N 2 ) as physical blowing agent. PHBH is marine degradable polymer known for its heat treatment weakness. Gel permeation chromatography and rheological measurements showed that the molecular weight was reduced when processed at temperature higher than 160°C; however, it had prominent melt memory of crystallization lower 170°C. The effect increased provided crystal nucleation sites, which became bubble sites in foaming process. Microcellular foams, whose cell size smaller 30 μm density 3 × 10 8 cells cm −3 , while suppressing thermal decomposition tuning injected polymer's (melting temperature) core‐back timing. mechanical properties resulting evaluated, indicating high ductility microcellular obtained melting 150°C.

Phenomenology of bubble nucleation in the solid-state nitrogen–polystyrene microcellular foams

Experimental results on bubble nucleation in the solid-state polystyrene–nitrogen system are presented. It was found that the bubble nucleation occurs over a period of approximately 30 s, and is not instantaneous as previously suggested. Over the range of nitrogen pressures explored, 4–14 MPa, the cell nucleation density increased exponentially. However this increase was many orders of magnitud...

Microcellular foams made from gliadin

We have generated closed-cell microcellular foams from gliadin, an abundantly available wheat storage protein. The extraction procedure of gliadin from wheat gluten, which involves only the natural solvents water and ethanol, respectively, is described with emphasis on the precipitation step of gliadin which results in a fine dispersion of mostly spherical, submicron gliadin particles composed ...

Homogeneous bubble nucleation in rhyolitic melt: Experiments and nonclassical theory

[1] The transfer of volatiles from the Earth’s interior to the atmosphere occurs through degassing of magma, the dynamics of which assert a significant control on volcanic eruptions. The first and most critical step in degassing is the nucleation of gas bubbles, which requires that a sufficient number of volatile molecules cluster together to overcome the free energy associated with the formati...

The linear elastic properties of microcellular foams

The mechanical behaviour of a new type of open-cell foam made by a thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) process was investigated. Foams made by the TIPS process are characterized by cell sizes which are 10-100 times smaller than conventional foam materials. In this work, the linear elastic modulus of these foams in dynamic tension/compression was measured. A comparison was made with the th...

Melt Infiltration Processing of Foams Using Glass-Forming Alloys

Processing of foams from bulk metallic glass (BMG) alloys, using melt infiltration techniques, is reported for the first time. Foaming methods based on infiltration of two types of pattern materials are described: investment of a continuous refractory yielding very low relative density structures (5% dense relative to the BMG), and investment of a discontinuous refractory pellet bed yielding hi...
